A very brave and mellow pug goes skydiving with his best friend from 10,000 feet.

No, it’s not Sunny and that’s not me. Neither of us has been skydiving, though that’s on my list. I’m not sure if it’s on Sunny’s.

Win the Camping Adventure of a Lifetime

04-Sep-07

I almost hesitate to share this one, because I’m hoping to win it myself. :)

MySpace and the producers of the upcoming movie Into the Wild are holding a sweepstakes for the 6 day, 5 night wild camping adventure of a lifetime for 6 MySpace users. It includes:

  • Roundtrip airfare
  • Sea kayaking
  • Camping and hiking at Mt. Rainer National Park*
  • Visit Olympic National Park, the hot springs and Pacific Coastline
  • Spend a day taking in the sights of Seattle

The movie’s MySpace page says “Click here to become a friend and automatically be entered.” It looks like about 1500 people have entered so far and the contest ends 9/17.

*I’m pretty sure they mean Mt. Rainier National Park.

The Ultimate Float Trip

26-Apr-07

Famed physicist Stephen Hawking, the author of A Brief History of Time, is right now coming in from the ultimate float trip aboard a modified Boeing 727:

The flight, aboard a modified Boeing 727 aircraft, involves a series of parabolic maneuvers in which the aircraft ascends and then plummets, enabling passengers to feel weightless, said Peter Diamandis, chief executive officer of Dania Beach, Florida-based Zero Gravity Corp., the organizer.

“For about 30 seconds, during each parabola, Professor Hawking will feel weightlessness,” Diamandis said late yesterday in e-mailed responses to questions. “It is a wonderful, gentle, and almost dream-like sensation of pure freedom. Almost like flying in your dreams.”

The flights cost $3,500 - a real bargain compared to the projected cost of Virgin Galactic’s 2 1/2 hour space flights at $200,000 or the current space tourist flights at $20 million.

I took this photo of the Ozark Mountains in fall last weekend near Branson, Missouri. Though this particular trip was a roadtrip and not a floattrip, you can see that the Ozarks are a beautiful place for your next outdoor adventure, whether it’s a trail ride, a hike, a camping trip, bass fishing on Table Rock Lake or trout fishing on Lake Taneycomo.

Drought Hitting Arkansas Forests

05-Oct-06

Kevin reports that drought conditions have affected the Ouachita National Trail seriously, drying up year round streams that backpackers rely on for water.

Unfortunately, the northern leg of the trip (Old Military Road/Boardstand Trails) was completely dry. Streams that usually flow year-round were all dry. That meant I had no water to purify on the trail, and only the 4.1 liters I was carrying. THAT meant that I was forced away from preparing my freeze-dried food for dinner, and instead conserving my water for the trip out.

He was testing out some new equipment including that may be of interest for backpacking, overnight canoe/kayak trips and others, including a superlight backpack and a tiny little Coleman stove. He also posted some nice pictures of the Ouachita National Forest on Flickr.
